Dort wurde Berend geboren. Von der Pike auf lernte er das Handwerk der Seefahrt als Schiffsjunge auf einem Walfnger, wurde dann ob seines Geschicks trotz seiner Jugend bald schon Kapitn auf einem hollndischen Kauffahrt Schiff. Der frhe Tod seines Vaters fhrte ihn nach Hamburg
